HHS Advanced Career Technical Education

Summary of Program

All students should be aware of a wide spectrum of career possibilities, have the opportunity to prepare for employment or further study in a career field and understand the need for the application of academic disciplines in most career and technical settings. Toward that end, we will provide opportunities for all interested students to:

  • explore and experience a wide variety of career and technical applications and occupations
  • develop marketable technical and employable skills
  • experience and practice the application of academic learner outcomes which they are expected to master in the core academic curriculum

The Ann Arbor Public Schools Career and Technical Education programs provide an excellent opportunity for all students planning rewarding careers. With rapidly changing global job markets, prepared students focus on developing talents to make them self-sufficient and able to quickly adjust and meet market needs.

What are the Career and Technical Education Programs?

Automotive Service
This represents one of the largest and most stable fields of employment, providing nearly a million jobs nation-wide.

Home Building
For more than 30 years, high school students have been building quality homes under a non-profit program with the assistance of local builders, craftsmen and their instructor.

Business Services
Business Administration is one of the most popular choices for college study and this course offers an excellent overview of a fascinating career.

Cosmetology Services
The job outlook is good. In addition to classroom instruction, students operate a beauty salon and serve real customers. Successful applicants become licensed cosmetologists.

Drafting Communications Technology
A course of basic lettering and techniques, working drawings and blueprint reading. Also pictorial drawing, sheet-metal surface developments and computer aided design (CAD).

Graphic Communications Technology
Desktop publishing, page design, typography, work processing, copyfitting, halftone photography, multi-color image assembly and presswork are all explained.

Health Sciences Technology
Jobs are plentiful. Studies are offered in health and disease, advancements and trends in health care, patients' rights and much more. Includes clinical experience in local hospitals.

Information Technology
Areas of media, computer, satellite, laser and electronic communications are discovered as students investigate and problem-solve using state-of-the-art tools and materials.

Marketing
In this course you learn that the fundamental objective of any firm is to market its products or services profitably. Advertising, public relations, research, promotions, writing and graphic design are all part of the curriculum.

Machine Tool Technology
This course helps students develop the skills in the precision machining field using machine tools and computer numerically-controlled machine tools. Employment is expected to increase at an average pace through the year 2005.

Physical Technology
It's very electronic, digital and mysterious. This course is designed to eliminate the "magic" of today's technological advancements.

Cooperative Occupational Education (C.O.E.)
Juniors and seniors participate in this valuable school-supervised work-learning experience through paid employment in the community. Jobs are in fields related to your Career and Technical Education Program.

How do I sign up?
In many of the beginning level programs you may sign up while in the eighth grade and begin taking courses in the ninth grade. In Home Building, Cosmetology, and Health Sciences Technology there is an application required. Your counselor has the information and individual brochures with details on each of the program areas.

High school students, see your counselor or visit the Cooperative Occupational Education (C.O.E.) Office, or do your own investigating at the Career Resource Center at Huron.
