INSURANCE BENEFIT POLICIES FOR STUDENT ATHLETES
Michigan law provides that local Boards of Education may require benefit fees or premiums from interscholastic sports participants (House Bill #2357). Our athletic insurance is a supplementary, secondary policy to a family's own health insurance and will only cover those expenses remaining after the family insurance is exhausted. This plan of insurance is EXCESS ONLY. It will not duplicate benefits paid or payable by any other insurance or plan including HMO's or PPO'S. Deductibles, certain types of x-rays. orthotics, and physical therapy for rehabilitation are typical items covered by our policy that are often not part of a family's policy. For students circumstantially lacking family insurance, our policy will cover all expenses. The purpose of our insurance is to help families manage the financial burden resulting from a sports injury. The policy is specifically written to cover ACCIDENTS that occur while participating in interscholastic sports. An "accident" is an unexpected, sudden, and definable event that is the direct cause of a bodily injury, independent of any illness, prior injury or congenital predisposition. If an athlete is injured, his or her parent(s) should contact the Athletic Office immediately in order to process a claim form. Accidents must be reported to the school within 20 days. Claims must be filed with our carrier within one calendar year. Our office staff will assist parents and students with completing the claim form. The fee will be collected from each athlete only once during any school year regardless of the number of sports in which she or he participates. If a student is removed from a team in order to reduce squad size, the benefit fee will be refunded. If a student voluntarily leaves a team or is dismissed for disciplinary reasons, the fee will NOT be refunded. |
