TO PLAY OR NOT TO PLAY?

Only parents and guardians know the answer to this question as it applies to their student, but keep in mind what the data show:

Ninth grade students here at Huron and other places tend to get better grades if they:
  • Play a sport (two-sport athletes do even better).
  • Study with friends.
  • Watch less than 10 hours of television per week.
  • Do not work for pay.
  • Spend more than 10 hours per week on homework.
  • Talk on the phone less than 10 hours per week.
  • Spend less time just hanging out with friends.
  • Spend less time in peer-controlled activities (like partying) and more time in adult-controlled and supported activities (like sports).

Historically here at Huron, ninth graders who play a sport during their first marking period, as a group, get higher grades with fewer absences on their first report card than those who don’t, and tend to maintain their grades for the rest of the year. Students who participate in sports tend to get good grades and think school is important. Moreover, they have a powerful positive influence on other students.

Playing a sport doesn’t come with a guarantee but it does seem to help kids succeed in school!
