Ann Arbor Public Schools Fair Treatment Policy
The
Ann Arbor Board of Education hereby declares its commitment to exercise fair
and impartial treatment of all students, parents, and employees of the Ann Arbor
School District.
No
student shall be excluded nor prohibited from participating in any educational
program or activity available in any school on the basis of race, sex, color,
national origin, creed, religion, socioeconomic status, handicap, or other
inappropriate criteria as prescribed by law; neither shall any student be
compelled to participate in such program or activity because of the above
criteria. Any such discriminatory practice or inhumane conduct shall constitute
just cause for grievance and/or remedy. Encouragement or discouragement of
students to participate in programs or activities shall be based solely on
sound educational reasons.
All parents, employees, students and citizens of the Ann Arbor School
District have the right to a due process procedure in the handling of their
complaints against the school system.
This
policy is intended for the benefit of the complainant and not for the
protection of the district or its agents against complaints.
The
right to confidentiality, both of the complainant and of the accused, will be
respected consistent with the school district's legal obligations, and with the
necessity to investigate allegations of misconduct and to take corrective
action when this conduct has occurred.
