HANNAN'S HELPFUL HINTS

Dear Parent/Guardian,

In order to guarantee your child and all the students in my classroom the excellent and positive learning climate they deserve, I am utilizing the following plan.

MY PHILOSOPHY: I believe that all of my students can learn and behave appropriately in the classroom; consequently, no student may stop teaching and/or learning from taking place. Manipulation or arguing about the class management is not tolerated. Regardless of others, each person is responsible for himself/herself. Mathematics class can be more interesting by adding to discussions, working on class problems, and answering questions.

CLASS RULES: I will be following Huron High School’s school rules. I have a few additional “respect” rules that I use in my classroom.

R aise your hand and be acknowledged before you speak. Stick to the topic at hand.
E mergencies - the only reason passes are given to leave the classroom.
S leeping, and personal conversations/note writing are not appropriate.
P repare to succeed by doing the homework and leaving iPods, cell phones, and food put away.
E xpect to participate in class and clean up after yourself.
C ome to class on time with all of your materials - book, paper, pen, pencil, work, calculator, etc.
T reat others and yourself with respect - bullying, insults, and arguing are not permitted.

REWARDS:
1. Gain respect from others (teacher, parents, peers).
2. Good citizenship may help a borderline grade.
3. Verbal praise; parent notified - note, call, conference, e-mail.
4. Surprises - sticker, food treat, raffle prize.

CONSEQUENCES:
1. Lose respect from others (teacher, parents, peers).
2. Verbal warnings, student conference, sent to the hall, lunch detention.
3. Parent notified - note, call, conference, e-mail.
4. Counselor and/or administrator involvement if necessary.

HOMEWORK PAPERS AND WORKSHEETS: Students are expected to write the dates on the unit’s schedule sheet and note any changes. Assignments are given orally, explained, and written on the board. Call a friend if there is confusion. Homework should include the following:

1. Name, class period, and date (top right).
2. Write the assignment, including the pages and problem numbers (top center).
3. Use pencil and show all work/steps.
4. Label each problem. Graphs need a title and axes labeled.
5. Make sure to answer all parts of the question.
6. When checking, mark each problem in pen or marker with a C or X and correct mistakes.

I don’t make a lot of extra worksheets. If a worksheet is lost, the student can always obtain it from another student and either photocopy it or write their own answers on a regular piece of paper.

GRADES: Grades are determined by dividing the total number of classwork, homework, quiz, project, and test scores the student accumulates by the total number possible. There is a small amount of extra credit available every quarter if all work is in. Grades are kept on the computer and updates are posted often (usually five per quarter - about every 2 weeks). If all work is turned in, it is almost impossible for a student to fail. Most of the homework is graded on effort and completion, but all work must be shown to obtain full credit. The semester grade is a combination of the two quarter grades (40% each) and an exam (20%).

TARDIES: Huron High School’s red pass system will be used.

MATERIALS: The materials necessary for my class are: a pencil, pen or fine marker, paper, textbook, graph paper, calculator (scientific or graphing is best), small binder or folder with pockets, protractor, compass, and ruler. See me if you need any of these. All math work should be kept in a separate area; a small (1 inch) binder seems to work best as you can have sections for notes, book work, worksheets, etc.

*CLASSWORK: required almost everyday and usually completed in class, sometimes done in groups, and periodically collected or checked-in for effort (5-10 points).

*HOMEWORK: required everyday (or almost), graded in a variety of ways (hand-in, check-in, boardwork, mini quiz, grade own or neighbor's...), worth around 5 points and usually due and graded the day after it was assigned. Late work is handled on an individual basis, receives a maximum of a “C”, and must be turned in before the unit test to receive any credit.

*QUIZZES: usually 1 per unit (major), worth 30-50 points, occasionally done in groups or taken home.

*TESTS: usually 1 per unit, worth 60-100 points, usually calculator allowed, no formal retakes.

*NOTE: all of the above work (classwork, homework, quizzes, and tests) is returned to the student. Do not throw out any work or assessments in case there is any discrepancy in a score and there is a midterm and final exam. You can always keep really old work at home.

ABSENCES
Huron High School’s attendance policy will be followed. If a student must be absent, he/she has the responsibility of finding out what work was missed and completing it (2 days for each day absent). If possible, it's best to call a friend before returning to school. If the absence is pre-planned, the work can usually be obtained in advance. Unexcused absences may result in a loss of credit for the work missed. Excused absent work is not considered late.

SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS
All class rules do apply when a substitute teacher is present. Remember that as a student, you represent Huron. The substitute should end his/her day thinking that Huron students are some of the best in the city. If your name appears on the sub's report for any reason, I will follow up when I return.

It is in your child's best interest that we work together in relationship to his/her schooling. Your child and I will go over all of the above information in class. Please, keep this handout as a reference. Sign the separate slip, and have your child bring it to school tomorrow. If you have any questions or comments, please write them on the slip.

Sincerely yours,
Miss Hannan
