Defining Health & Wellness

Health, like love or happiness, is a quality of life that is difficult to define and virtually impossible to measure. Health is defined differently among experts, but all definitions have a common theme:  self-responsibility and adopting a healthy life-style.

Health is a state of complete physical, mental, and

social well-being and not merely the absence of

disease or infirmity.

--World Health Organization 1947

Wellness has been defined as

an approach to personal health that emphasizes

individual responsibility for well-being through the

practice of health-promoting lifestyle behaviors.

--Hutley & Schlaadt, 1992

Health Education Vision Statement

Health education is that continuum of learning experiences which enables people, as individuals and as members of social structures, to make informed decisions, modify behaviors, and change social conditions, in ways which are health enhancing.  Students learn to obtain, interpret, and apply health information and services in ways that protect and promote personal, family, and community health.

A health educated person will be able to:

--apply health promotion & disease prevention concepts & principles to personal, family, & community health issues
--assess, achieve, and maintain health enhancing behaviors throughout life
--identify and manage controllable health risks
--respect and promote the health of others
--select, access, and use health services, products, and information

Philosophy- Physical Education

The Physical Education Department of Huron high is in agreement with the Huron Mission Statement which states that Huron "is to provide students with the environment and educational experiences that will empower them to take responsibility for their lives, and the world in which they live.

Our primary goal is to help students help themselves. It is important that students take control and responsibility for their lifestyle. Our intent and commitment is to motivate the students to become physically active, more importantly, we want the students to develop an attitude that values participation in meaningful physical activity.

We believe strongly in the student ability to take charge of the health and physical fitness aspects of their life.
