CLASS CHOICES FOR STUDENTS
WHO QUALIFY FOR ESL 1 STUDENTS WHO QUALIFY FOR ESL 1 ARE READING AT A PRE-K – 3RD GRADE LEVEL IN ENGLISH AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SCHOOL YEAR. ENGLISH ESL 1 – Reading & Writing ESL 1 – Grammar ESL 1– Basic English Language Class *Students NEED to take both classes ART Anything EXCEPT the following due to language level Graphic Design Photography Advanced Classes BUSINESS ED. Computer Aps. Word Processing CAREER TECH ED. Nothing – due to safety issues FOREIGN LANGUAGES Only their native language. They should wait until ESL 3 to learn a third language. MATHEMATICS Algebra 1X Geometry 1X Algebra with Math Support Lab *Numbers are the same but the math vocabulary and how to interpret it in story problems and directions in English can be VERY difficult. MUSIC Any P.E. Any except Personal Fitness & Sports Medicine due to reading requirements and vocabulary. HEALTH & WELLNESS NO – due to reading assignments & cultural differences. Give them a year to improve English skills and get used to our culture before placing them in this class. SCIENCE NO – unless they can audit it or take it for a G credit only. SOCIAL STUDIES NO – too much reading, content, and vocabulary. SCIP - ABSOLUTELY NOT *A reduced schedule may be an option for ESL one schedule – ie – no 6th hour or take a PASS class. CLASS CHOICES FOR STUDENTS WHO QUALIFY FOR ESL 2 STUDENTS WHO QUALIFY FOR ESL 2 READ AT THE 3-5TH GRADE LEVELS IN ENGLISH. WRITING SKILLS COULD BE EVEN LOWER. ENGLISH ESL 2 – Language & Composition ESL 2 – Intermediate Language *Students NEED to take both classes or a combination of one ESL 1 and one ESL 2 class. ART Anything BUSINESS ED. Anything CAREER TECH ED. Anything FOREIGN LANGUAGES Only their native language. They should wait until ESL 3 to learn a third language. MATHEMATICS Any MUSIC Any P.E. Any HEALTH & WELLNESS OK SCIENCE NO APs, or ACs NO Physics/Analysis SOCIAL STUDIES OK – history or cultural courses about their own continent since they probably have some background knowledge already. CIVICS – ONLY with G credit CLASS CHOICES FOR STUDENTS WHO QUALIFY FOR ESL 3 ENGLISH ESL 3 – Integrated Language They may also take one of these in addition to ESL 3 – not instead of: Speech Short Readings Modern Readings Language & Literature Acting TV & Radio *THEY MAY ATTEMPT TO TAKE ANY OTHER CLASSES. CONTENT TEACHERS MIGHT NEED TO STILL MODIFY TO MEET STUDENTS’ NEEDS. CLASS CHOICES FOR STUDENTS WHO QUALIFY FOR ESL 1 – two years in a row SAME AS FOR THE FIRST TIME THEY GO THROUGH ESL 1. SKILLS ARE STILL TOO LOW TO TAKE MORE ADVANCED CLASSES. CLASS CHOICES FOR STUDENTS WHO QUALIFY FOR ESL 2- two years in a row PLEASE MEET WITH ESL TEACHER TO DISCUSS INDIVIDUAL STUDENTS’ PROFICIENCY LEVELS, STRENGTHS, & WEAKNESSES. EXITING ESL STUDENTS MAY EXIT ESL IN ONE OF THE FOLLOWING WAYS: 1) MEETING EXIT CRITERIA IN READING, WRITING, SPEAKING, & LISTENING. 2) A LETTER FROM THE PARENT FOR THE CUM. FOLDER & ESL FILE. IT NEEDS TO SAY THAT THE PARENTS ACKNOWLEDGE HIS/HER CHILD QUALIFIES FOR ESL, BUT THAT THEY ARE DECLINING SERVICES. *IT IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED AND ENCOURAGED THAT THE PARENT TALK WITH THE ESL TEACHER BEFORE DOING THIS. *STUDENTS MAY NOT EXIT THEMSELVES. ADVANCED PLACEMENT TESTS For students who may be ready, encourage them to take the AP tests in their native language and possibly the composition and literature tests too. Tests are available in: Spanish, German, French, Latin, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, Russian, Korean, etc. www.collegeboard.com *It would be great for kids to get credit for their native language even if it is not offered at our school. * Consider CR credit for preparing for the test. * Consider CR credit for students who go to native language schools on the weekends. |
