Every Fall, the band takes off the black and white and puts on the white, green and gold. The Concert and Symphony bands become the famous Rhythm Rat Marching Band!
The Marching Band
The Marching Band plays during all home football games and amazingly, has a new show for every game during the regular season. Their performance consists of the Pre-Game and Half-time. During the pre-Game, the band enters quietly from the end zone (after marching down from the band room of course) and then gets the audience's attention with the powerful Battle Hymn. Then the drum line takes over with the rapid Entry Cadence as the entire band shifts to their Pre-game positions. The feature song is then played (where the flags get to have a little fun showing off what they can do) followed by the National Anthem and the school fight song GO HURON. For Half-time, the band gets to have a little more fun playing songs circling a certain theme. Every show during the regular season is unique. And every once and a while, the band will actually dance as the Drum Line plays...
The Drumline
This is the highly energetic and closely-knit percussion group. The Drum Line is born during the spring and performs at the Fourth of July Parade. It consists of Quads, Snares, Basses and Cymbals. The Drum Line is the group that plays the Series as the band marches down to the field and plays intermittently during the game. The group also plays the loud and lively Congo every Friday under that arch at the end-of-day bell to energize the student body for another football victory!
The Flags (Color Guards)
These are the Rats in white and green. They are the ones who add a little visual appeal to the show with their dances and highflying flags. They aren't just known for adding energy to the game, they also add a little color with changing costumes!
The Band Proper
This is the formal name of those in the band with instruments ranging from the trumpet and clarinet to the huge sousaphone! They are in all green with the white sash and sometimes...they are known to dance!
The Drum Major
This is the student leader in all white. This individual is the one who shouts out the commands and blows the whistle (with a twirl of the baton too). Every year, the duties pass to the Junior Drum Major with the ceremonial baton toss as the Senior Drum Major and Junior Drum Major exchange batons as they are thrown.
The Conductor
Of course it's Mr. Roberts! And what is he wearing? It looks like green and gold!!!
