NEW HURON TRAFFIC PATTERN TIPS
updated 8/31/05
Thank you Huron families for being so patient while we all adjust to the new traffic patterns in and around campus! The following reminders and tips will help improve the site operations for all students, their families and staff.
All on-site construction was completed for the first day of classes this week. The City of Ann Arbor is completing the new “Michigan Left” on northbound Huron Parkway and installed the posts for the Huron Parkway lighted pedestrian crosswalk earlier this week. These items were not originally projected to be completed until October but the City has been very helpful in accelerating the installation of the pedestrian crosswalk.
Here are some tips to make your arrivals and departures to and from Huron's campus more safe and less hectic:
- The new north and south loops (one way, two lane roads) provide lighted drop-off zones for students. Be sure to drop-off students in the RIGHT LANE only and leave the left lane free for passing or through traffic; do not allow students to exit the vehicle in the left lane.
- PULL FORWARD as far as possible in the drop-off lane before letting students exit. Be sure not to block the left passing lane when you stop.
- Peak morning times are from 7:25 – 7:35 AM. ARRIVE A FEW MINUTES EARLY to get in and out quickly.
- When parking on site, please choose the entry closest to your destination to minimize the amount of on-site traffic and pedestrian conflict. (Examples: Students parking in the west student lot should enter the site from Fuller Road. Students parking in the baseball lot should enter at the northern Huron Parkway entrance.)
- DO NOT PARK OR LEAVE VEHICLE UNATTENDED in drop-off lanes during school hours (7am to 4pm) , especially during morning arrival and afternoon departure times. Additional visitor parking spaces were added by the Cafeteria and Administration entrances on the south loop (adjacent to Fuller Road) to provide additional convenient spaces for visitors to Huron.
- For drivers arriving from south of the river, the City of Ann Arbor is installing a “Michigan left” to allow northbound Huron Parkway traffic headed west on Fuller to avoid the lengthy delays at the Huron Parkway/Geddes intersection. This will allow cars to use the “Michigan left” to access the less utilized right turn movement onto westbound Fuller. This will also assist in reducing traffic entering at the northern Huron Parkway entrance due to the current wait times for turning left onto westbound Fuller.
- The new connector road (adjacent to the football stadium and music wing) will allow two-way traffic between the north and south loops. This will also provide a new and flexible means of exiting the site from the football lot, and faculty lot to Huron Parkway.
Former Huron Class Principal Brad Mellor is now the AAPS Director of Transportation. Mr. Mellor and his team are working to fine tune the bus arrival and departure sequences with the new traffic patterns. This will improve flow through the north loop as we fine tune the bus routes, and they gain efficiency in their arrival times on campus.
Again, a sincere THANK YOU to all members of the Huron Design Team who worked on the site improvements! We will be sharing initial design work for the pedestrian plaza that will be constructed next summer in the coming weeks. Stay Tuned!
