On Saturday morning, October 4th, 63-year old Mr. George Commings, Huron's beloved United States History and Psychology teacher, passed away.
Mr. Commings has been a staff member at Huron since 2001.
He has always been a sports enthusiast, enjoying football and following the Michigan and Michigan State football teams.
Mr. Commings chose to pursue a career in teaching in admiration of his mother, who had also wished to pursue teaching. However, her family did not have the financial resources due to the Great Depression.

In honor of his mother, Mr. Commings established the Madia Commings Memorial Scholarship in her name endowing a chosen student who wished to seek a career as an educator and achieve what his mother could not. To date, seven young women have been awarded the scholarship, given about $500 each.
George took great pride, not only in his role as a teacher, but also as a coach and mentor. He provided education, guidance and inspiration to his many students throughout his 40 year career. A revered teacher, he had a distinct personality and will be remembered for years to come. He had his own distinct way of bringing humor into the classroom.
The students who had him in class have been profoundly touched by this tragedy. He will be sorely missed by all.
