Presently, Huron has three programs available:
1) Teacher Consultant Program for students with a mild learning difficulties (ILC);
2) Resource Program for students with a more significant learning difficulty, and;
3) Self-contained Program for students with a mental impairment.
These programs have many characteristics in common. Together, they make up the service delivery system at Huron. The system offers a continuum of service options from a self-contained program to general education class placement. Supporting this system are a psychologist and full time social worker as well as speech and language services and vocational counseling.
All students receiving special education services have been determined by an Individual Education Planning Committee Team meeting (IEP) to have one or more handicapping conditions. An IEP determines eligibility, appropriate programming and service delivery model. Huron services a full range of students with handicapping conditions including Autistically Impaired (AI), Emotionally Impaired (EI), Hearing Impaired (HI), Learning Disabled (LD),Mentally Impaired (MI), Physically or Otherwise Health Impaired (POHI), Speech and Language Impaired (SLI), and Visually Impaired (VI). Many of the students have more than one handicapping condition. All students in each program participate in general education classes. At this time, there are no students in a self-contained program for the entire day. In addition to the general classroom curriculum students participate in programs such as Pioneer and Huron High School vocational classes, COE, COPE, special vocational classes, co-curricular activities such as inter-scholastic athletics, and drama. Any placement and service is determined by adherence to the Michigan Special Education Rules and Regulations.
