Special Education Services
At Huron High School, a continuum of services is offered in order to meet the individual needs of our students.  All students are expected to participate in the general education curriculum as much as they are capable and supports are provided to facilitate this participation. Supports include the following:

The Personalized Curriculum Program is for students who are facing the greatest academic challenges.  There are two classrooms, one which serves primarily ninth and tenth graders and has a more functional curriculum focus.  The other serves primarily eleventh and twelfth graders and has a community based experience component which helps facilitate the transition process.

The Resource Program has been modified recently in response to the state’s increased graduation requirements.  Academic Support Math now provides resource students with a support hour that reworks, reviews and re-teaches the concepts covered in the general education math program of Algebra and Geometry.  These students earn a math credit for their general education class once they master the state objectives, and an elective credit for the support class.  Academic Support English works in the same way, offering support for the general education curriculum and assisting students in meeting the state objectives.  Credit is offered in the same manner as with the math.

Academic Support General is an elective class which is offered to our special education students who aren’t being served in the above programs.  Students have an hour scheduled daily which allows them to work individually or in small groups with teacher consultants in a variety of content areas.  Students earn an elective credit for attending this class regularly.

In addition, all special education students at Huron are welcome to drop in to the academic support room when they have a pass from their teacher.  Students often take tests, having them read aloud or modified in other ways, they may come to work on longer projects or choose to work on the computers where they have access to a variety of programs as well as designated server space.  Teacher consultants are available to answer questions and work individually or with small groups of students.
