Textbook: Parenting

Course Description

Students gain an understanding of the development and care of children in this course.  Consideration is given to parenting skills, discipline, and guidance that will promote the development of a happy and secure individual.  Students will earn 0.5 (1/2 credit) towards graduation.

Areas of study include parenting choices; heredity and human reproduction; pregnancy and prenatal care; birth and the newborn; physical, intellectual, emotional, and social development of children; children's activities; effective parenting skills; experiences with children; community resources and services for children; and family crises involving children.  This course is valuable to both males and females for developing effective parenting skills.  Students interested in education, medicine, psychology, or other child-related careers will benefit from this class.

Rationale

Child Development and Parenting will benefit the student in the following ways:

  • Understand the importance of being prepared for parenthood.
  • Exploring factors involved in prenatal and postnatal care of mother and child.
  • Broaden knowledge of physical, intellectual, emotional, and social development of the child.

Baby Think It Over

You will have the opportunity to carry a Baby Think It Over, which is the electronic baby that cries at random intervals.  If this is something that you cannot fit into your schedule, or would rather not do, an alternative assignment will be provided.
