FAQ: SAT I - Scholastic Assessment Test I

| What is the SAT? |
The SAT is designed to help measure a student’s ability to handle college-level work. The seven sections that currently make up the exam are comprised of a variety of verbal and math questions, designed to gauge a student’s critical thinking and problem-solving skills. This tests assesses verbal and math reasoning abilities. The seven sections included are:
- Three mathematical sections
- Three verbally sections
- One non-scored "equating" section which can be verbal or math

| Should I take the SAT? |
| Yes, definitely. Selective colleges and universities in Michigan will use these test results as one of their tools for determining admission. Check each school of your choice for their admissions requirements.It is best to check Huron High School's Events Planning Calendar for key dates and/or check the Collegeboard web site for SAT Test Dates (collegeboard.com). |
| When should I take the SAT I test? |
| Many students choose to take the SAT I test in their junior year. Check with the Huron High School's Events Planning Calendar for key dates. |
| When is the SAT I test given? |
| The SAT I test is administered on seven national test dates through the school year starting in October, November, December, January, March or April, May and finally in June. The tests are usually given on a Saturday. Selective colleges and universities in Michigan will use these test results as one of their tools for determining admission. Check each school of your choice requirements. If the SAT I score is a college admission requirement, plan to take the test no later than December of your senior year. |
| When should I take the SAT I ? |
| Many colleges and universities recommend taking the ACT during the second half of the junior year of high school. |
| Can I take the SAT I more than once? |
| It’s typically taken in the junior or senior year, but many students take the SAT more than once since most colleges consider only the highest scores. |
| Where do I go to register for the SAT I test ? |
| Students can get a mail-in registration packet from the Career Resource Center at Huron High School. Students can register to take the SAT I at any testing center. Students can also register on line at the collegeboard web site- http://www.collegeboard.com. Payment will need to be made by credit card. The registration fee is approximately $ 28.50. Additional costs will be added if registration is late. |
| What if I cannot afford the registration fee? |
| Students can apply through their counselor for a registration fee waiver. Additional costs will be added if registration is late. |
| When can I begin registration? |
| Students can begin registration at the start of the new school year. The deadline is approximately five weeks prior to the test date. |
| What If I have to change the test date, place, or level of test? What to do? |
| Students can change the test date, change the test center, change the test level SAT I or SAT II or contract the testing center if student has disabilities. Students need to contact their counselor or go to the collegeboard web siteto make appropriate changes. |
| How much time does the SAT I test take? |
| Students can plan on staying at the testing center for approximately 3 hours. Student should plan to arrive between 8:00 AM and 8:15 AM to allow for processing. The actual test is 3 hours. The test will end no later than 12:30 PM. |
| What do I need to bring with me to the SAT testing center? |
Student should come prepared. Students should have with them:
- Proper Identification which may include school ID, driver's license or passport
- The Admissions Ticket that they received on-line (if test was registered on-line).
- Two No. 2 pencils with soft erasers
- Acceptable calculator with is almost any four-function, scientific, or graphing calculator.

| When do I receive my SAT testing results? |
| Scores are mailed from the testing centers about three weeks after the student takes the test. |
| How do understand the score I received on the SAT test? |
To get a better understand of your score, they are reported on a scale from 200 to 800. There are two scores - one Verbal and the other Mathematics. Scores are calculated as follows:
- Questions answered correctly receive one point
- Questions that are omitted receive no points
- A fraction of a point is subtracted for incorrect answers to multiple questions
- No points are subtracted from incorrect answers to the SAT I math questions requiring student-produced responses.
The score range reflects the fluctuation of a test taker's score on a given day +/- 30 to 40 points. The percentile is the percentage of a students who got a score lower than the student;s score. Percentiles are given for the nation and the state. A 562% would mean that the student did better that the 62% of the group.

| How do I get the SAT I exams results sent to the college/universities of my choice? |
| At the time that you register, you can request that scores be sent to colleges/universities and to the places you are apply to for scholarships. After the time you register, you may send your scores by the following ways. For an additional fee, you can have your scores sent by completing using the online SAT Score Sender, or by mail you can send with the Additional Report Request for Sent with the Admissions Ticket or request by Telephone at 1-800-SAT-SCORE. |
| At the time that you register, you can request that scores be sent to colleges/universities and to the places you are apply to for scholarships. By selecting the option "Score Choice", students can decide and may elect to withhold sending the scores until they see them. Scores can be released on line, students can use the Score Release Form on a score report or in the Registration Bulletin, or students can contact the Registration center by telephone at 1-609-771-7600. |
