2008-2009 Season in Review

The Huron Women’s Basketball Varsity team enjoyed their best overall season since 1995 with an overall record of 20-4 capped off with a District Championship.  The explosive River Rat squad averaged just under 60 points per game during their successful season.  They had a SEC league record of 14-2 with two nail biting losses to undefeated Bedford by 2 points and 3 points.

In the district tournament, the River Rats avenged a district final loss at the hands of South Lyon a season earlier by defeating the Eagles in the district final this season.  The season came to an end with a 45-44 OT loss to Niles in the regional semifinal, ending the River Rats hope for their first regional title since 1995.   Also, the 08-09 team made the BCAM Girls’ Team Academic All-State Honorable Mention Team with an overall GPA of 3.081.

Four seniors will graduate this season (Sierra Curtis, Naomi Kesten, Tyler Hardy and Helen Steinhauser).  Hardy and Steinhauser were 4 year varsity players and 2-time captains and their contributions to the program will be sorely missed.  Tyler will be moving on to play basketball and study at Wayne State U.  Helen will continue her athletic and academic career at UW-Milwaukee with a full scholarship to play soccer.
The JV team, led by Chris Kutschinski in her first season, was plagued with injuries all season, yet still had a successful 8-12 campaign.  They finished 2 games (won 1) with only 3 players.

The Freshman team, led by Chuck Phillips in his first season as the Freshman head coach, had a productive season with a record of 8-10.  The Freshman team also overcame injuries and a depleted roster for a major portion of the year.
